The more than 9,000 alphabetically arranged entries for cities, towns, districts,
territories, and nations from around the world that are included in this revision
reflect changes that have occurred since the original volume (1984), such as the
fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Each volume begins
with a list of alphabetical entries found within that volume. Entry headings
generally reflect the most commonly used name, which is often the English or
romanized place-name. Headings include variations of the place-name as well as
the place.s location. Entries offer a history that varies in length from a few
sentences (such as for Minchinhampton, in England, included because it has traces
of prehistoric settlements and earthworks) to five pages (for United States of
America). Entries are cross-referenced. Following the A.Z portion of the
encyclopedia is a .Regional Bibliography. arranged by county and listing both
books and Web sites. An index is found at the end of the third volume indicating
pages where the place-name can be found but no volume numbers. A section of color
plates is inserted in each volume. The introduction offers justification for
producing the encyclopedia in print when similar information is easily accessible
online: .Online sources require filtering for accuracy and relevance.. Still,
although informative and useful, this encyclopedia is probably not a necessary
